It’s common knowledge that moisture is one of the biggest causes of mold growth within a home—but many types of moisture can be sneaky. You might not even realize that it’s moisture that can cause mold. Everyone knows that leaks can cause mold, but what are some other areas where moisture can appear and create mold problems?
Here are a few other common moisture sources that we at Inspecticore often come across after discovering mold within a building.
Clothing Hung in the Shower
A lot of people do this! Everyone has articles of clothing that they don’t want to put in the dryer—and most of the time, we hang them up in the shower to dry, right? Well, when the dampness from those clothes evaporates into the air, it creates a breeding ground for mold, especially when your bathroom is smaller or doesn’t have a window.
Condensation
Condensation can develop on chilly surfaces inside your home, such as cold metal pipes or concrete floors. This condensation is obviously wet and makes these (and other areas) subject to mold growth.
HVAC Systems
When an HVAC system artificially heats or cools the air, it has the ability to cause humidity issues, which can result in unwanted mold growth. Be sure to keep an eye on your HVAC system’s “behavior”.
The Weather
Moisture in the air around you can cause mold. If it’s been rainy or snowy lately where you live, you may notice new mold growth on your walls.
Wet Clothing and Towels
Mold can begin to grow on wet items of clothing and towels in 24 hours, so it’s very important to keep these off of the floor. Lots of people have the bad habit of leaving wet towels or swimsuits lying around, but beware! It’s not a good idea.
Your Shower
When it comes to mold’s favorite spots inside the home, showers are high on the list. Why? Because showers are often wet and warm, with a food source (rugs, carpets, anything wooden, drywall, etc.). Especially if your bathroom isn’t very well-lit, mold loves to grow and hang out on the wall of a shower. Because of this, it’s smart to “squeegee” your shower after each use.
When you find yourself faced with mold or mold-causing conditions, don’t take chances. Serious mold problems can cause all kinds of damage to both your home and your health.
